This test is done to find out the liquid limit of soil as per IS: 2720 (Part 5) – 1985. Similarly, the moisture contents at which the soil changes its behavior from a plastic to a semisolid state is called as the plastic limit of soil.
The moisture content at which the cohesive soil passes from a liquid state into a plastic state is called the liquid limit of the soil.
